A good way to practice your guitar skills is to listen to a song and play along. Unfortunately, a guitar solo can be too fast and you may end up entangling your fingers in the chords, rather than keeping up with the song. If you wish to learn a song note by note, you can use Song Surgeon to reduce the audio file's playback speed. Besides slowing down songs for your own purposes, you can also use this software to create audio lessons, transcribe conversations and much more. The software places various controls at your disposal, which are very easy to understand.

Song Surgeon is free to try, with some limitations. Its setup file is not large and you can install its core components in a matter of seconds. The setup wizard will suggest installing WinPcap 4.1.2 as well. Although it is not mandatory, you must install it if you wish to use certain features.

The user interface will display waveforms, for the left and right channels, when you load an audio file. You can use a series of sliders, located in the lower region of the window, to increase or decrease the audio track's tempo and pitch, zoom in on the waveform and set up a loop between two points on the audio timeline. The software allows you to import audio files in various formats, record your voice or rip audio CDs.

If you slow down an audio track, you can click a series of on/off switches, to enable a master loop bypass, toggle between performance and transcribe modes or eliminate "Munchkin" sounds. In other words, even if you reduce a song's speed down to a crawl, you will still be able to make out the notes and lyrics.

The software comes with other useful tools as well. You may click a series of options, located above the waveform, to bring up an equalizer, a vocal reduction slider, to copy, cut and paste selected segments, apply fade effects and more. A music pad can be opened as well, on which you can draw staves, insert musical notation symbols and play your composition.

Pros

You can modify a sound track's tempo and pitch. The software provides a series of options which can help you preserve the sound track's quality. You can also cut and trim your tracks and perform other actions.

Cons

The trial version can be used only for a few hours. If you need to practice a new song or transcribe a conversation, Song Surgeon's enhanced capabilities will make your work as easy as possible.
